Robert Swan OBE, is the first man to walk unsupported to both North and South poles. He is also an environmentalist, a United Nations goodwill ambassador and a charismatic public speaker on the topic of leadership. In March 2008 a group of our highest performing managers, one from each operating company, had the chance to join Robert on a two and a half week expedition to Antarctica. Just getting to this continent is an expedition in itself, involving crossing the dreaded Drakes Passage and its icebergs.
On arrival in Antarctica the expedition visited the 'E Base', a research station that has been established to prove the viability of renewal energy sources, in even the most inhospitable conditions. For the following two weeks the group then explored the amazing landscape of Antarctica and watched its wildlife, both from the land and the icy decks of the ship. In between adventures, lectures were held on assorted leadership topics and thought given to environmental strategies for their businesses when the team returned home.
The trip was an extraordinary, perhaps life-changing experience for the participants and several of them were personally featured in both local and national newspapers as well as in management journals
